About
Yumiko Fujiwara is a Japanese writer, filmmaker, and multidisciplinary artist whose work spans film, photography, and video art. A graduate of the AFI Conservatory’s Screenwriting MFA program and Sarah Lawrence College, Yumiko brings a global perspective to her storytelling, shaped by a childhood spent across Tokyo, Mexico City, Johannesburg, and Rome.
Her work explores emotionally charged, character-driven stories across genres - often rooted in high concepts, psychological drama, and intimate relationship studies. In 2021, her screenplay The Fire Outside was selected for the prestigious Black List. In 2023, her feature project And So We Call Each Other Love was selected for the Shanghai International Film Festival project market. Short films and branded work she has written have screened at over 60 international festivals, and her clients include Riot Games, Shiseido, Toyota, Uniqlo, Google, and Canon.
Originally trained as a screenwriter, Yumiko is now expanding into directing, with a background in audiovisual work including narrative and experimental shorts and art installations. Her audiovisual and photography work has exhibited in San Francisco, Lisbon, Rome, New York, and Los Angeles, and has been featured in both print and online publications.
She is currently developing multiple feature and television projects in the U.S. and Japan, including adaptations of Japanese IP, globally-set period dramas, and neo-noirs and thrillers set in the US, Europe, and Japan.
Yumiko lives in Los Angeles with her rabbit, Alyosha. She enjoys mountain climbing in her free time.
