About

Yumiko is a Japanese screenwriter and photographer. Drawn to stories that combine the intimate with the epic, she explores human connection through high-concept, thought-provoking narratives. She aims to tell stories that bring a multicultural perspective across a wide range of genres - including science fiction, thrillers, period pieces, and romance.

Born in Tokyo, Yumiko was raised across the globe in cities such as Mexico City, Johannesburg, and Rome before moving to the US to attend Sarah Lawrence College in New York. She later earned her MFA in Screenwriting from the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles.

Yumiko's script "The Fire Outside" secured a spot on the prestigious 2021 Black List, while her script "And So We Call Each Other Love" was selected for the 2023 Shanghai International Film Festival project market. Short films, commercials, and narrative work she has written have received multiple awards and screened at over 60 festivals around the globe. Her branded content clients include Riot Games, Google, Toyota, and Uniqlo, among others. 

In the visual arts, Yumiko’s photography and film installations have exhibited in galleries and festivals in San Francisco, Rome, Lisbon, New York and Los Angeles, as well as in print and online publications.

Yumiko lives in Los Angeles with her rabbit, Alyosha. In her free time, she enjoys mountain climbing and discovering niche fragrances.
