About

Yumiko is a Japanese writer, filmmaker, and photographer. Bringing a multicultural perspective across a wide range of genres - including science fiction, horror, period pieces and romance - she specialises in nuanced character-driven stories set in high-concept, immersive worlds. 

Born in Tokyo, Yumiko was raised across the globe in cities such as Mexico City, Johannesburg, and Rome before moving to the U.S. to attend Sarah Lawrence College in New York. She later earned her MFA in Screenwriting from the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles.

Her screenplay The Fire Outside secured a spot on the 2021 Black List, while And So We Call Each Other Love was selected for the 2023 Shanghai International Film Festival project market. She has written stageplays, short films, commercials, and narrative work that have received multiple awards and screened at over 60 festivals worldwide. In the world of branded content, her clients include Shiseido, Riot Games, Google, Toyota, and Uniqlo, among others.

As a filmmaker, Yumiko has produced and directed short narrative and experimental films and documentaries, with an emphasis on character studies and portraiture. Video art installations, alongside her photography, have exhibited in San Francisco, Rome, Lisbon, New York, and Los Angeles, as well as in print and online publications.

Yumiko lives in Los Angeles with her rabbit, Alyosha. In her free time, she enjoys mountain climbing and discovering niche fragrances.
